21 Nov 2009 | 8:26 pmMuch has been said about New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick opting to go for the first down from his own 28-yard line in order to salt away the victory against the undefeated Colts. The decision was highly controversial, and in the end, it created a stir like nothing in recent time about a coach's decision in a key game like the one played that Sunday night in Indianapolis. It was billed as "The Game Of The Decade." Belichick has been rolled over the coals because the Pats failed to make the necessary two yards for the first down. At least that is according to what the… -
Patriots-Jets: Keys to the Game
21 Nov 2009 | 4:22 pmAfter a week of debate over "the call," the Patriots have another bitter rival to face this week. The Jets, of course, handed this team a bitter loss in Week Two, meaning the Pats have extra incentive to focus this week. Though the Patriots typically rebound the week after a loss, it would be a mistake to assume this game will be a rout. Though the Jets have struggled as of late (losing their last two games and five of their last six), they are still perfectly capable of making this meeting miserable for the Pats. The following are the keys to the game: Establish the run early. In Week Two,… -
Tom Brady Receives Little Blame for Loss to the Colts: Big Surprise!
20 Nov 2009 | 7:57 pmAlmost a week removed from one of the greatest regular season games played in recent memory, my attention has turned to the media's treatment of Tom Brady after his Patriots fell short to the Indianapolis Colts, 35-34. Now, if you're sitting back and thinking to yourself that Tom Brady has little to be blamed for, you might very well be right. But that's not the point. I am not trying to argue that Tom Brady had a poor performance in his loss to Indianapolis; I'm simply going to illustrate the treatment Brady receives in comparison to the quarterback who did win Sunday's show-down. No, Peyton… -
Even Geniuses Make Mistakes: The Bill Belichick Story
19 Nov 2009 | 9:44 pmNobody is perfect, not even the most intelligent people in the world. Robert De Niro has made a couple bad movies, like Stardust and Hide and Seek. Michael Jordan couldn’t cut it as a baseball player, and his decision-making as a basketball executive has been spotty at best. And Flavor Flav always chooses the wrong women on "Flavor of Love." Now another genius has made a misstep. The smartest mind in the NFL picked a bad time to go against convention, and I’m not talking about calling a draw play on a 3rd-and-15. The talk dominating the water cooler areas this week has revolved around… -
NFL Week 11 Picks from a Patriots Fans' Perspective
19 Nov 2009 | 1:17 pmAfter a final 10 minutes of Sunday night's game that had me squirming miserably in my seat, knowing full well that Peyton Manning was going to lead the Colts to victory, this week is perhaps the first time ever that I haven't looked forward to seeing some more football. I really am enthusiastic about Laurence Maroney, but he is in my dog house until further notice after coughing one up in the end zone. That touchdown would have put our lead juuuust out of reach, so not even Peyton Manning could touch it with one of his epic fourth quarter runs. But alas, the NFL season isn't just going to…

Jabba the Rex
19 Nov 2009 | 4:42 pmIt is a period of war in the AFC East. After Supreme Chancellor Belichick lost many men in an early season battle with the evil Jets Empire, the Patriot rebellion has been in a state of disarray. A botched 4th down made matters worse, and Luke SkyWelker has been sent on a mission to rescue his friends Han Brady and Princess Gisele from the clutches of the vile gangster Jabba the Rex. Kill Bill?
16 Nov 2009 | 12:13 pmOh the gnashing of teeth and pulling of hair! The Pats were within mere ticks of the clock of beating their archrival Colts, not to mention spoiling their hitherto perfect season but they blew it on a failed fourth down conversion. And it’s all Bill’s fault. Hold on. I agree, it was a helluva risky call. With about two feet to go, and deep in their own territory, the penalties for not completing the play were harsh: the Colts, rich with time-outs, would regain possession almost in the red zone. In that case, the winning touchdown was nearly inevitable. Why take such a chance? But think… -
Colts Stage Fourth Quarter Comeback Beat Patriots 35-34!
15 Nov 2009 | 9:38 pmA few years from now when Peyton Manning is inducted into the NFL Hall Of Fame there is a good probability that the game the Indianapolis Colts played against the New England Patriots on November 15, 2009 will be brought up. They will talk about how he marched his team repeatedly down the field in the fourth quarter to score 21 points and would score 14 points in the last 2:27 of play and came back and defeated the Patriots 35-34 in front of the home crowd at Lucas Oil Stadium. Faulk is also helpful on special teams when needed as he has returned 5 punts for 31 yards (6.2 avg) and 6 kickoffs for 144 yards (24.0 avg) so far this year. New England Patriots vs New York Jets preview
20 Nov 2009 | 8:18 pmThe New England Patriots (6-3) are hosting the New York Jets (4-5) this week and are looking for revenge. The Jets beat them 16-9 in week 2 and the Patriots were shocked. That was when Tom Brady was still struggling and adjusting after returning from his knee surgery that kept him out the entire 2008 season. The real Tom Brady is back and I don’t think the Jets will have an answer for him and the Patriots offense. He has been finding Randy Moss for some big touchdown passes and hitting Wes Welker and a lot of catch and run plays. They are also averaging 114 rushing yards per… -
New England Patriots 34, Indiapolis Colts 35
16 Nov 2009 | 9:04 pmThis game between the Indianapolis Colts (9-0) and New England Patriots (6-3) lived up to all of the hype and came down to the wire. Who would have thought a coaching mistake from Bill Belichick would end up being the Patriots’ downfall. Widely considered the best coach in the NFL, Belichick took a big gamble with 2:08 left when he went for it on 4th and 1 from his own 28-yard line. The Patriots were up 34-28 and turned the ball over on downs, giving Peyton Manning a short field. This was obviously a bad call by Belichick as Manning easily led his Colts’ to a touchdown… -
The New England Patriots lose Brandon Tate for the year
15 Nov 2009 | 6:20 pmThe Patriots have lost rookie WR/KR Brandon Tate for the rest of the season due to a knee injury. He only played in 2 games in his rookie season and he didn’t catch any passes. He did carry the ball 1 time for 11 yards and he also returned 4 kickoffs for 106 yards (26.5 avg) this year. Tate will be replaced by 28-year old WR Sam Aiken as the #3 WR for the Patriots the rest of the way. He has played in 8 games for the Patriots this season and he has caught 9 passes for 139 yards (15.4 avg) with 1 TD grab. -
New England Patriots at Indianapolis Colts preview
13 Nov 2009 | 7:04 pmThis is the matchup of the year, with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots (6-2) taking on Peyton Manning and his Indianapolis Colts (8-0). I think this will be a Brady-Manning shootout and it should be pretty exciting to watch. Although both defenses are solid, both Manning and Brady are great quarterbacks who perform well on the big stage so it will be hard stopping either one. Manning has passed for over 300 yards in every game but one this season, so the Patriots secondary better be ready for a long day. They need to be ready to adjust on the field, as Manning loves to audible…

Game Preview: Jets @ Patriots

Patriots in the RedZone, sponsored by ComCast
21 Nov 2009 | 6:43 amTalk 4th and 2 all you want. In our matchup against the Colts, we went 3 for 6 in the RedZone. RedZone efficiency doesn't always determine success on the field (Randy Moss's 63 yard TD pass), but it IS a good indication of how well a team does when the game gets "compressed" inside the 20. And, in the case of this past Sunday, it was certainly one of the contributing factors to our loss. In for 6 vs. a Stephen Gostkowski field goal and game over. Despite its troubles in the RedZone, New England is at 45% for the year. Not bad, but it would be good to see some… -

Focusing on Jersey: Patriots take on Jets this Sunday
20 Nov 2009 | 12:16 pmMore photos » by Stephan Savoia - AP Somehow he looks taller than he really is Browse more photos » Rivalries are great things. They pit one team against another and, in our cases, one fanbase against the other. Head writers from our AFC East blogs always get a little "what about us" when I go into depth about the Patriots rivalry with the Colts and, to an extent, they have a point. Division rivalries are usually a bit more geographic, hence more tangible in a sense. The closer a city or state is, the more likelihood of having traveled there. Aside… -

Why going for it was definitely the right call
20 Nov 2009 | 9:59 pmYour defense was an utter disgrace in the 4th quarter. Usually collapses of that magnitude are precipitated by turnovers. Nope, not here. Ironically, the only turnover during the colts' comeback was committed by ...the colts. Go figure. The pats d was so epically bad, it looked like manning was engaged in a scrimmage. It also left your coach with an ugly choice. It should never have got to that point. Also, and TMQ touched on this tangentially, so many tactical decisions made by coaches are predicated on the principle of CYA, so that they can duck direct… -
Sebastian Vollmer Best Injury Fill In so far on the O-line
20 Nov 2009 | 11:49 amIn my opinion I think Sebastian Vollmer has done a good job protecting Brady. He came in on minutes notice and is starting to get noticed more in the games we have played. I think Vollmers standout game was when we played the colts last week. He did a great job holding off of his defender. Sebastian Vollmer was a wonderful person coming off the bench to protect Brady. Series History: Patriots vs. Jets
19 Nov 2009 | 1:19 pmA few Pats-Jets Nuggets of Note, courtesy of the New England Patriots Media Department: May all of the holes appear this big to Laurence Maroney on Sunday. The Patriots, who fell to the Jets at the Meadowlands, 16-9, on Sept. 20, have not been swept in a season series with a divisional opponent since 2000. New England owns a 41-12 (.774) record in regular season AFC East games since the beginning of the 2001 season, compiling the best intra-division record of any team in the NFL over the last eight seasons. Since the beginning of the 2003 season, the Patriots are 20-1 (.952) in games… -
The Jets Will Have To Pressure Tom Brady To Come Close To Winning.
19 Nov 2009 | 1:00 pmI think if the Jets want to have a good game this Sunday against us they will have to pressure Tom Brady and play double coverage on Randy Moss. If not we will have a repeat of 2007 against the Jets. Look for Brady to throw towards Baker a lot. When the Brady to Moss doesn'twork Wes will always be catching passes. The offensive line is also improving every week with Sebastian Vollmer. Thats what my predictions are. -

Tom Brady Press Conference - 11/11/2009
11 Nov 2009 | 10:59 amNew England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady addresses the media during his press conference at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday, November 11, 2009. Q: This game is quarterback versus quarterback and everybody hypes it as Brady versus Manning. TB: Well, it's not that. It's two football teams who play a lot and we seem to play every year. For a while, we were part of the same division and through the years we've had plenty of our most critical games against them. It's a great rivalry and I think it's for a lot of reasons. It's usually the same cast of characters over there that we're facing and… -
Randy Moss Postgame Press Conference
8 Nov 2009 | 1:30 pmPatriots wide receiver Randy Moss addresses the media during his postgame press conference at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, November 08, 2009. (On his 71-yard touchdown reception) "Just a play, just we executed. It was the play we called and everybody did what they had to do and 71 yards later it was a touchdown. So you really have to commend all 11 guys, because I've said once before, if you got 11 guys working together, anything is possible. That's what we tried to do here, is just execute on offense and everybody did everything right on that play and you saw the results." (On what… -
Tom Brady Postgame Press Conference
8 Nov 2009 | 1:30 pmPatriots quarterback Tom Brady addresses the media during his postgame press conference at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, November 08, 2009. Q: On the one situation that you had at the end of the first half, what would have to happen differently for you not to take a chance like that? Would you have to have kind of a lead, or would you do that regardless? [On the play with one second left] TB: Yeah, I probably cut it too close. That was probably not the smartest play in the world. We got fortunate that there was one second. [We] tried to probably get a little too much with not enough time. We…

JETS: Darrelle Revis Conference Call
18 Nov 2009 | 1:00 pmNew York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis addresses the New England media during his conference call on Wednesday, November 18, 2009. Q: What did you, looking back, learn from that first time you faced Randy Moss in Week Two? What did you take out of that game? DR: Looking at that film this week, straight up, I think - preparation-wise - I think that I had a good game plan, covering him the best way, just switching up certain things off coverage: a little bit of press, just making sure I'm giving him different looks. Just watching the past couple games they've played, they're doing different… -
JETS: Rex Ryan Conference Call
18 Nov 2009 | 11:35 amNew York Jets head coach Rex Ryan addresses the New England media during his conference call on Wednesday, November 18, 2009. Q: Might you have a Kleenex box nearby? RR: That's what I did. I did [that in] our press conference, I brought it out and said, 'I got a new sponsor'. But you know, it's funny...things get out and stuff like that but, again, I'm myself. And if I'm not a typical coach or whatever, so be it. I know one thing. I'm myself and there's no bigger competitor than I am. Q: Was that a spur of the moment thing when the tears started to roll? Or was that something you were trying…

Patriots Preview vs Jets
22 Nov 2009 | 7:35 amBy: GregAnother Sunday and another huge game for the Patriots. No more fourth and 2 talk. No more Colts or Peyton talk. Its time for our hated "rival" the Jets. They beat the Pats early in the season and a win for them now would put them back in the picture for division champs. This time around however the Pats come equipped with the Waterbug and a better Brady. The Jets are missing two big pieces in Chris Jenkins and Leon Washington. Keys to the Game1. Throwing the kitchen sink at Sanchize: He was anointed the Franchise quarterback after a few games but now defensive coordinators are… -

Our Coach has marbles.....
17 Nov 2009 | 7:17 amBy: GregLook we can all be mad at BB. How the hell can you go for it in your own territory on Fourth and 2. What the hell was he thinking?? Has he lost his mind??What it comes down to is that the team we cheer for on Sundays, has Marbles and big ones.Well if he would have made that fourth down, he would have been a genius. Let me ask you another question: If you are the Patriots down by 6 with 2 minutes left to Peyton Manning and its 4th and 2 on your 30. Would you be more happy if you saw the Colts punting the ball or going for it? Honestly I rather have the Colts punt the ball. Why? Because… -
About Last Night
16 Nov 2009 | 10:06 amDear Patriots Fan: Thank you for coming here for two reasons. Firstly for visiting our humble little blog and secondly for not giving up on the Pats to the point that you cease reading about them. What can we do for you in your time of need? We could stomp around and complain about the bad positioning of the ref who called the fourth and two a bobble when, clearly, the first down was achieved. We could rail against the official who worked the clock by pushing it back to two minutes when we would be unable to challenge the spot because we ran out of timeouts and booth reviews only come in… -
Pats Preview vs Colts
15 Nov 2009 | 7:46 amBy: GregThe biggest game the Patriots have played in over a year. The Colts lead the conference and are undefeated. If the Colts win they pretty much locked up homefield advantage over the Patriots. If the Pats win they hold the upper hand of head to head matchup (Number one tie breaker) in the Conference. This is a big big game. I can feel it in the air tonight......Keys to the Game:1. Stopping Dallas Clark: Clark is on his way to having the best year of any TE any year. He is Mannings safety blanket and is a key in that passing game. Well Colts we have your kryponite (sp) his name is…

Tale of Two Coaches
21 Nov 2009 | 4:18 pmTale of Two Coaches This weekend, we are fortunate enough to witness a meeting of two complete opposites of the exact same nature. That’s right, we’re going to get to watch New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick stare across the sidelines at the leader of the New York Jets, Rex Ryan. I think this illustration from NEPatriotsDraft.com speaks volumes. Let’s get this out of the way right up front: Bill Belichick is a robot. He does not wear his emotions on his sleeve and crying at all, let alone in front of people, is totally out of the question. Belichick barely talks… -

Check out Joe’s interview here, and his work (including my interview) over at TurnOnTheJets.com. For the record, Joe predicted a score of 23-17 in favor of the Patriots for this weekend.
